Community Engagement - Something to Think About

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of 100 people, with all existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look like this:

  • There would be 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 from the Western Hemisphere (North and South), and 8 Africans.
  • 52 would be female, 48 would be male.
  • 70 would be persons of color, 30 would be white.
  • 10 would be gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
  • 6 would be over the age of 65.
  • 33 would be children, 4 with special needs.
  • 30 would be Christian.
  • 6 people would own half of the village's wealth, and all 6 would be citizens of the U.S.
  • 9 would speak English.
  • 50 would suffer from malnutrition.
  • 80 would live in substandard housing.
  • 70 would be unable to read.
  • 66 would not have access to clean, safe drinking water.
  • 1 would have a college education.
  • 1 would be near death, 1 would be near birth.
  • No one would own a computer. When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for tolerance and understanding becomes glaringly apparent.

Three Things To Think About

1. Cows
2. The Constitution
3. The Ten Commandments

Cows: Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that our government can track a cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washington? And, then track her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give them all a cow.

The Constitution: They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it's worked for over 200 years and we're not using it anymore.

The Ten Commandments: The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments in a courthouse is that you can't post "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery" and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians -- it creates a hostile work environment.
